What is the coagulation process?

Blood coagulation is the process in which coagulation factors are activated in a certain order, and finally fibrinogen is converted into fibrin. It is divided into the intrinsic pathway, the exogenous pathway and the common coagulation pathway.

The coagulation process can be divided into three stages: the formation of prothrombin activator, the formation of thrombin and the formation of fibrin. When a small blood vessel is punctured and causes bleeding in the body, the damaged blood vessel contracts first, shrinking the wound, slowing blood flow, and aggregating coagulation substances. The local blood viscosity will increase, which is conducive to hemostasis. The exposure of the subendothelial components of the blood vessels causes platelet activation, adhesion, aggregation and release reactions, and the formation of platelet thrombi locally to block the wound.

At the same time, the exposed subendothelial components activate factor XII to start the intrinsic coagulation pathway, release tissue factors to start the exogenous coagulation pathway, and finally form fibrin thrombi, blocking the wound and completing coagulation. Among them, the factors involved in intrinsic coagulation are factors VIII, IX, X, XI, and XII, the factors involved in exogenous coagulation are factors III and VII, and the coagulation factors involved in the common pathway are factors I, II, IV, V, and X. These factors work together to complete the blood coagulation process.
